More Than an SUV: Electric Utility Vehicles Meet Performance

Daily commutes to work, grocery shopping trips, and extracurricular activities are common reasons many of us get behind the wheel and drive.

It’s no wonder electric vehicles have become quite popular on the road these days—thanks to their many qualities. They’re modern, clean and quiet, they have sleeker designs and are much more eco-friendly than their gas counterparts. They range from little to zero emissions and some are even compact enough to squeeze comfortably into any parking space.

City dwellers with congested commutes will agree, cruising on high-traffic roads can very easily translate into frustrations—that may irk you—before starting your day at the office. However, electric vehicles (EVs) can offer solutions to enhance the commuters’ experience, by pairing comfort with sustainability.

But what about those who want more space in their vehicles? Those who enjoy a big trip to the shops or like to be the soccer team’s official taxi? Then an SUV is in order! Who better to start our wish-list than the biggest manufacturer of the electric motor: Tesla.

Tesla Model X

Tesla Model X, is the newest vehicle of the brand that will hit the streets on 2015 and can be reserved now. It can transport seven people, who won’t have to climb over seats and fiddle with buttons to get aboard. The uber modern Falcon Wings makes a powerful statement the moment you open your Tesla and welcome all passengers into the driving experience.

It goes from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds, with zero tailpipe emissions, and improved torque and traction. We love the Tesla Touchscreen on the dashboard. GPS? Yes, please! Also, equipped with many entertainment options while on the go.

Porsche Cayenne 2015Next year will also see the birth of the new Porsche Cayenne 2015, a luxury plug-in hybrid that may keep the Panamera S E-Hybrid 3.0-liter gasoline V6 engine, paired with an electric motor that will do the main part of the job. If it’s anything like the Panamera or the Cayenne S, this EV will go up to 84mph in electric mode and 160 mph in gas.

BMW Concept X5 eDriveIf your heart is set on eye candy, then the BMW Concept X5 eDrive is the one for you. And if you’re eager to be one of the first owners, you’ll have to travel to Europe next year. Not a bad excuse to visit, right?

For this sleek EV, BMW has coined the term, “Sports Activity Vehicle” (SAV). What makes it a sports car is its four-wheel drive system, paired with a trademark TwinPower Turbo, four-cylinder petrol engine—plus the space inside.

Want to bring your friends along for an adventure? Hop in! Put those golf clubs in the back, pile up the bikes or even tie a kayak on the roof, with BMWs exclusive add-ons.

The Concept X5 eDrive brings together Tesla hybrid technology and BMW luxurious design, giving you power with very low emissions. This spacious SUV can be charged at home, using any outlet. Unfortunately, as its name says, it’s still a concept and not on the market, yet. But good things are worth waiting for.

Toyota RAV4 EVOn a final note, we take this opportunity to bid farewell to the Toyota RAV4 EV. Whoever drove the gas-engine version of this SUV, may be aware of its lack of stability at high speeds. Sadly, the RAV4 EV was a flop for Toyota; selling only 1,594 units in two years. Likewise, Toyota will not be renewing their contract with Tesla; which makes us think the carmaker may not produce another EV any time soon.

Among the electric SUV listed in this article I think that the best model is the Tesla Model X. This vehicle combines the qualities of a sports car to the comfort of the Tesla Model S. The car is sold in two versions (with batteries of 60 and 85 kwh), which provide a mileage of 370 km or 480 km. The seating are seven and has a touch screen of 17 “. Even the aesthetics is very pleasant, with a style very delicate (unlike the classic SUV). The price is about $ 70,000. What do you think about electric SUV?
